i will not leave you alone, beautiful heart

writing from the heart, today in our “opening up through grief” ritual

My heart is full of the answers I need. My heart is so full and so generous and so sweet when I slow down with her and give her room and attention.  She always just wanted – just needed – room and attention.  Being with our hearts is changing the world, is making it bigger, realer, truer, more sharp, more here.  I am not afraid of my heart because she is good and perfect.  She is the real thing, the real experience.  She is real love, real life.  My heart, I am sorry for segmenting you off, for pushing parts of you away, for scorning parts of you.  My heart is big and bold and wanting to be bigger.  My heart wants to grow, wants to stretch, wants to break.  I will let her.  I will support her.  With my breath.  With my awareness.  With my sky. With Sky.  With Father Sky.  I will not fear her.  I will not leave her.  I will not leave you alone, beautiful heart.  I will not abandon you.  You are never alone again.  I am becoming the sky, for you, my beautiful ocean. Every wave is mine. Cherished.  You are mine.  Cherished.  You are me.  Cherished.  Forgive me.  Please forgive me.  Please stay with me, trust me again.  My heart has some aching to be tended to.  Perhaps a good deal.  Perhaps more than I know.  That is why I am here.  That is why I have come.  To tend our shared heart.  To love this body, to love all of us.  I am showing up for it and to it and in it.  I forgive myself for anything, for everything, that muted it, made it hurt worse, made it hurt longer.  I am forgiving my sweet, silly ego for holding on so tight.

we are all together (i love LA)

i felt overwhelmed with sorrow this weekend, knowing ICE was kidnapping people in LA: fathers and mothers from their children’s elementary school graduations, laborers just waiting for work in a Home Depot parking lot. laying in the dark in my apartment in the middle of downtown LA, within miles or less of these unspeakable acts, I felt my body melting into a huge sense of “what can I do,” sucking away my life energy, like falling back into this empty darkness. I got on my knees on the floor and sobbed, crying out “why?!”. as the hours unfolded into days, I felt so depleted and spent a lot of time in bed.

then yesterday, on Sunday, I got up, had some coffee, and put on sunscreen to go to the rally at city hall.  I haven’t been to a protest with militarized police before, and though I was unprepared for and scared of getting tear gassed, I figured “worse things are happening.”  when I arrived about thirty minutes after the start time, the street was so full of people it was impossible to see where it ended.  all types of people were there - white guys with american flags, masked indigenous folks with sage chanting in the middle of the street, young guys on motorcycles with mexican flags, old teacher-looking ladies, kids with handmade signs.  my eyes are brimming with tears again as I think back on it.  there’s not a way to make this feeling come through without you going for yourself~

there is no power and beauty and love like the people joining together and standing up for themselves, for ourselves.  it’s this palpable act of “we are all together.” it is an acknowledgement of the fundamental truth that we are all together. and it is so deeply relieving to experience; it is soul medicine.

the wind and the light of humility rushed into my body.  a sudden and complete reminder that i can show up and i can continue moving toward, healing toward, speaking toward, growing toward, loving toward, learning toward the world i believe in and want to be a part of.  that i am a part of it, in the way i show up now, even when i’m afraid of taking risks, even when i’m unsure what i can give, unsure what level of risk i am prepared for.  that i am the people. the journey is the preparation and when the people rise our courage rises together. we can show up for it and to it and trust the journey. and have love for where we are.  i’m not alone in my numbness and i don’t have to stay stuck there.  and i don’t have to be perfect or have all the answers to just put my shoes on and go.

i love you.  and text me (Signal or Telegram) if you are in LA and wanna go to future stuff together (360-224-8898).  also reach out if you’re somewhere else and want support finding something to get involved with. you deserve community & the community deserves you. <3

let's find our way back to each other

it’s a terrifying time in this country

the administration is plummeting us full force into fascism. this nation was formed through slavery and genocide, through the fabrication of a “white” race elevated above others, obscuring our ties to each other and creating “minorities” to scapegoat for the problems created by our unjust, unsustainable economic system. our foreign policies play out this legacy across the world, funding and assisting the current genocide of Palestinians (and many other peoples), destroying democratic movements, and propping up 70% of the world’s dictatorships. today, these policies are coming home to roost and setting themselves up in our backyard.

get involved in political organizing

i no longer feel right in my soul without naming this, clearly and often. the times are urgent. signing petitions, calling representatives, and protesting on their own are not enough - because we can’t win the sympathies of soulless leaders through begging. we need to each be involved in organized struggle to build the power of everyday people.

hate is organized and in power; we need organized love

let’s not experience this fear on our own. let’s not sit alone in despair. those who subjugate us are organized and in power in the highest office. to birth a different future, a future where love can thrive, we need to join together as working class people, standing up for our individual and collective needs. we must not succumb to the whims of capitalism, which imposes on us a false scarcity, and the fatal delusion that we (or the “winners” among us) are separate from anything else.

unionizing and striking are proven, necessary ways to gain power

if you are able to join a workplace union, join. or, find resources here on how to organize at your workplace. through the power of union organizing, workers can withhold their labor while supporting each other, and force corporations to meet their demands before returning to work.

[forgive the crudeness of the following metaphor] i think of this like someone in an abusive relationship saying “please stop abusing me,” versus them saying, “if you don’t stop abusing me, i will leave.” in the second case, there is an assertion of the person’s power and willingness to enforce boundaries for their well-being, without which the pattern is profoundly unlikely to end.

unionizing followed by organized striking has powerful implications for political change when a large portion of the population does it. unionization of the world’s major companies could result in the workers taking over industry, democratizing leadership, and creating a system where decisions are made based on meeting the needs of workers, society, and the earth rather than on some sick person’s profit goals.

if you can’t join a union, join a local radical org (…or do both)

if you can’t join a workplace union, get involved in a community group with radical politics (politics that grasp at the root of the problems, not just surface level bandaids). a group with a real vision for the future that inspires you. i’m getting organized with LA tenant’s union, which i strongly recommend especially if you’re a tenant. as well as organizing for a new system, it’s a powerful way to protect your housing in the short term. there are many groups in LA and across the country to get involved with based on what most resonates with you. and i’d be happy to help you search.

how can we create systems of love if we’ve forgotten how to love?

more and more i feel that what we need most of all is a spiritual revolution. a reconnection to what really makes us human, what connects us to each other, what feels like life and gives us the desire to be alive, the reverence for life and for living.

how can we learn to stand up for ourselves and each other if we don’t deeply understand and value our own needs?

how can we create relationships, communities, movements, and systems based on love if we have forgotten how to feel and love our own bodies?

how can we create something new, something true to our hearts and souls, when we have severed our connection to our intuitive creativity because of fear, shame, self-doubt, and being stuck in our heads?

how can we find our way to a humanity based on care not control if we don’t find the way to do so within our own beings?

the group I host, inner oasis workshop, is about cultivating this inner revolution - specifically by practicing emotional vulnerability and intuitive creativity. you can join me in the next one-day intro workshop, or in an upcoming 3-month long peer support group. this group is for anyone and everyone.

alone-ness is a lie we’ve believed, for good reason.

this system and our norms make us feel like we’re alone. feeling alone is devastating. it sickens our souls, our bodies, and our minds. it disconnects us from our power, which is always shared. it’s also not true.

let’s find our way back to each other.

to experience the deep love within presence. 💗

at a grief songs event last season

A THREE-PART SERIES

grief songs is a three-part series that lasts all winter - and very intentionally so.  Processing grief has its own timeline ~ specifically in this culture that lacks support and creates repression in us.  More than a single event, the season serves as a long, wide container to help hold and integrate our own unique grief at the pace it naturally moves.  We'll process different themes at each event: a loose framework for cultivating soul-support at different levels.

Wherever you find yourself in your relationship to loss, this is an invitation to practice holding yourself and the community in a more holistic, more full, more human way. A place to practice being held as your whole self.

You are invited to attend all events and create the journey with us:

*SCHEDULE:
sat, dec 14, 7-10pm, downtown los angeles.  {{pt. 1 - grieving our hidden losses}}
sat, jan 25, 7-10pm, downtown los angeles.  {{pt. 2 - grieving our relational ruptures}}
sat, march 8, 7-10pm, downtown los angeles.  {{pt. 3 - grieving colonialism & climate change}}

“We are reshaped and remade under

the hands of grief.

It is the place where . . .

our ability to be truly alive is deepened.”

-Francis Weller

FREE TO THE COMMUNITY

This series is free as a gift to our community.

For those who choose to donate, we'll contribute all proceeds to a fundraiser for One Love Prison Meditation Project: "We know every person is worthy of love and support and we bring care to people who are incarcerated through the power of our meditation classes." Fundraiser link forthcoming.

I feel we are doing vital work through learning to be with grief. I hope to share this space with you. We have a few openings if you're interested in sharing a song or other piece of art~ please reach out!

a foundational building block of my healing: embracing sexual self-love

I've been thinking about the beginning of my journey into emotional wellness + spiritual connection. It started with intentional masturbation! I was coming out of a repressive childhood + difficult marriage, and felt such a strong craving to experience pleasure in my body. This foundation has served me so far beyond my sexuality though. Getting acquainted with and prioritizing my pleasure & desires from a self-love and self-care lens has been a powerful building block of trauma recovery, connecting deeply to the energy of my body, and learning to navigate life with a happiness and acceptance that serves me + those I love.
If you're interested in leaning into this part of yourself, I recommend finding a teacher to follow who approaches sexuality from a non-shaming, self-love perspective.

here are some resources i've used

Layla Martin (I took her jade egg class)

OMGYes (findings from the largest-ever research study into women's pleasure)

(these resources are geared toward women - if you know of similar teachers / courses for men + non-binary folks, send over & I'll add to the list!)

grief isn’t just about death (grief songs ‘23-’24)

beautiful friends,

i’m really looking forward to hosting this winter’s season of “grief songs.” last year's season was an exceptionally deep, warm, healing, and soothing experience for me. see below for reviews from other participants and details for attending this year.  first, though, i’d like to share some context with you on the events and why they may be relevant to you.

what is grief?

grief is simply a response to loss. that loss could be that of a close person in your life - whether through death or other circumstances.

but grief is not just about physical death. it’s an emotion and experience that can arise because of any kind of loss: it could be the loss of something you held dear, or even the loss of something you needed and never had.

here are (just a few) examples of experiences that can cause grief:

  • separation, divorce, a break-up
  • abuse, neglect, mistreatment
  • severing a strong bond of friendship
  • loss of a job or career

check out this article for more information

grief songs may be the right event for you if

  • you’re currently going through a season of loss
  • you have grief from your past that is not fully processed and you’d like a unique, supportive, welcoming experience to do so

reviews from last year

What did you love most about the grief songs events?

“I loved that this event curated a space where people could feel comfortable being vulnerable in front of others, including strangers. It helped me realize the universal emotional of pain and loss, and it was a great way to connect to others who could have been experiencing similar things presented in the songs.”

What kind of hope did you leave with?

“a renewed hope. a reminder that we have within us the ability to treat each other with tenderness - we just need to do it more often”

a personal reflection from last year

🕯 i've never experienced grief in the presence of as much conscious love as i did during grief songs: part one. it added a lightness to the experience of sorrow. like being carried, in the soul. 🕯

How would Jesus treat trans people?

Dear Christian + conservative loved ones,

I’m trying to figure out how to write this letter to you from a place in my heart that you can hear and stay open to.

I’m worried for the sake of my trans friends. My friends - those who I know and love dearly, and those who I haven’t met - who feel so rejected and unwelcome in this world.

Rejection hurts so badly. Especially when it comes from the people who we need, who we rely on. Many of us know this feeling. It’s old and deep; it happens when we’re young. Parents aren’t perfect - we are all muddling our way through this world with a heavy load - and when our parents don’t know how or don’t have time or energy to meet our needs, it can sting in the deepest place.

This pain is very very difficult to touch. Most of us spend our time and energy avoiding it, feeling that it will drag us down and consume us if we let it rear its head. And we don’t have time for that - we’re just trying to survive and keep our lives together. To do our best. To help out where we can.

But when this dark, cowering monster is unseen, living deep within us, without any care or attention, it impacts parts of our psyche. It becomes a voice in our head that tells us when we are or aren’t worthy of love. When we are or aren’t worthy of acceptance. When we are or aren’t worthy of celebration and embrace.

The message of the Christian religion is that we are all worthy of love. We are worthy of love because God loves us. We cannot be unworthy of love within the embrace of the unconditional love of God.

We each have nuanced perspectives from which we view the world. We each have our own inner demons to wrestle with. Life is full of questions and we must each approach our quest for truth individually.

But one thing is very simple, and you can understand it, if you will take a little time, and make a little space in your heart.

My trans friends in this country are feeling deeply unloved and deeply rejected. They are feeling profoundly afraid. They are being harmed, and being told, in a hundred different ways, that they do not belong here. That they are not allowed here.

My trans friends need you. They need you to travel a little ways into your own discomfort, and to listen to them. They need you to sit within the discomfort of your own gaze at them, and remind yourself that the person in front of you is a full human who God loves, who is worthy of respect, who is worthy of being listened to - really listened to. They need you to intervene within the online and in person spaces you are in where they are being ridiculed and dehumanized. They need you to take the courage to remind your community that trans people exist, that trans people are worthy of love and respect.

Love does not force a person to its will. God does not force us to his will in order to be deserving of love. We should not try to force others into our own will, our view of the world, of gender, of our comfort zone, in order to view them as worthy of respect and love. Jesus didn’t hang the Roman empire on crosses and bleed out their “sins.” He let the nails be pounded into his own flesh and he opened himself up to understanding the pain.

How can we open our hearts to people who make us uncomfortable? Who make us angry? Who, perhaps, make us feel disgust? Fear?

I am opening my heart now in this way, to you. The actions of your community make me feel these emotions (^), often. I hope you are listening to me. If you are, thank you. I love you. I’m here for you as you take courage to speak up in defense of the humanity of all people.

If we can’t find love within the hardest parts of our humanity, what worth does the message of Jesus have?

Thank you for taking the time to read.
Hannah

PRESS RELEASE: Los Angeles Artists Create “Go Iran Go Go” Music Video in Solidarity with Iran’s Revolution, Call Local Creators to Engage

12-29-2022

Contact: John Broadway: 559-827-8099, jbroadway@artivistsunited.com

Artivists United:  Los Angeles Artists Create “Go Iran Go Go” Music Video in Solidarity with Iran’s Revolution, Call Local Creators to Engage

Los Angeles, CA –  On November 19th, 2022, over a dozen creatives from different parts of the world gathered in Los Angeles to express solidarity with the Iranian women’s movement. On Wednesday December 28th, the music video was released through a collaboration with Artivists United, a social impact film/video and event production company.

The music video is a rewrite of Garbage’s Cherry Lips (Go Baby Go), scripted by Marianina, a Los-Angeles based Mexican artist who writes songs to make people happy, break the mold and change the world. The powerful lyrics reflect messages seen on social media from those on the ground in Iran. The artists pay up-tempo reverence to the power of Iranian women - and women worldwide - who push our world toward peace and freedom for all through incredible acts of individual courage and collective solidarity. The now over 100-day long women-led Iranian revolution is unprecedented in scale, intersectional solidarity, and resolve, and holds the power and intention to remove the theocratic, terroristic Islamic regime.

Though unique in circumstance, intensity of risk, and powerful local collectivization, the aims of the Iranian people are universal and must be elevated everywhere. True peace and freedom, rooted in love and respect for the individual’s rights to self-expression, are at the core of this powerful revolution and must be uplifted by artists, activists, and creators worldwide.

Artivists United invites Los Angeles creatives to connect their own work in solidarity with the Iranian Revolution.  The organization is accepting submissions in all artistic mediums for their event, “WOMEN, LIFE, FREEDOM: Solidarity with Iran,” at The Heart Department (Arts District on January 29th, 2023. This event will include an art gallery, featured musical artists, an open mic, and an altar-building ceremony for the martyrs of the Iranian revolution. More details to follow.

“We envision this event as an ongoing effort to inspire artists to use their craft for activism while providing them the opportunity to do so.” – John Broadway, Founder – Artivists United.

About Artivists United:  Artivists United is a burgeoning film/video and events production company that seeks to use their film/video and events as a foundation for social justice campaigns by empowering artivists (artist-activists) to utilize the change-making power of art.

PRESS RELEASE: Grief Songs: Showcase & Communal Grief Experience

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

December 31, 2022

For more information email:

Hannah Rooth, hannahroothmusic@gmail.com

Grief Songs: Showcase & Communal Grief Experience

(Los Angeles, California) – Oasis House Show invites the public to join “Grief Songs: Part Two,” a fusion of artistic expression and community healing practice. "Part One" of this series was a unique experience, and participants left feeling relaxed and connected.  “At a lot of shows, people will share vulnerable music sometimes, but there was something about this event that really prepped me as I came in. I knew that it was gonna be a safe space … that I could sit with those feelings, and I was really surprised at how much they came up but that I really did feel safe to lean in and express them,” reflected Aries Kae, local hip-hop singer and rapper.

"Grief Songs: Part Two" will take place on Saturday, January 21st, 2023, from 1-5pm, at Oracle Tavern (Downtown Los Angeles). It will include a sad-song showcase, meditative grief experience, and the opportunity to financially support Healthcare NOW, an organization working to expand healthcare to everyone nationally. With community members who are immuno-compromised and disabled in mind, it will be held outdoors, with masks required and distancing precautions. Spanish and ASL translation will be provided.

“Grief Songs” experientially demonstrates links between internal, communal, and sociopolitical love. Everyone experiences grief and needs loving support to heal and integrate experiences of loss, as everyone experiences illness and death and needs access to care services, including physical and mental healthcare.  When we leave community members out in the cold, trauma and pain multiply and we all suffer the consequences. Though a few individuals “profit” off of our healthcare system, which is out of reach for many*, our whole society suffers as we are each impaired by the loss of connection to each other and to our natural inclination to care for one another. In gathering to recognize this reality, we plant seeds for a shift in the living ethic of our city and our society.

The flow of this event is carefully curated and guests are strongly encouraged to attend for the full duration. Featured artists include Asia Chow, Hannah Rooth, Tori Leppert, OAKS, Marisa Reyes, Geneva May, Justin Dyer, Marianina, and more to be announced. Entry by donation, based on attendees’ means, between $0-500. Profits generated will go 80% to Healthcare NOW and 20% to artists. Seating is limited for safety reasons and expected to sell out. Livestream tickets are available with special perks.

Grief Songs: Showcase & Communal Grief Experience

(Los Angeles, California) Oasis House Show curator Hannah Rooth and team invite the public to join two-part series: “Grief Songs,” a showcase of local artists and meditative grief experience raising funds for Healthcare NOW, an organization working to expand healthcare to everyone nationally.

Grief Songs: Part One will take place on December 2nd from 7-10pm in Downtown Los Angeles. Entry by pre-sale only. Tickets: https://tinyurl.com/griefso

Grief Songs: Part Two is set for January 2023 with details to be announced at a later time.

Inspired by the isolation and grief caused by the COVID pandemic and the cultural overemphasis on individualism, Grief Songs is an experimental fusion of artistic expression and community healing practice. The primary purpose of the event is to bring members of the community together to open their hearts to the grief we so often feel compelled to bury or keep to ourselves. The Oasis House Show team hopes to stimulate emotional vulnerability and healing in the community by curating events that welcome people to come as they are. Oasis House Show aims to not exclude based on class, race, sexual orientation, gender identity, ability, or other factors that are commonly used to oppress groups of people.

Grief Songs: Part One will last three hours and include songs from over a dozen local musicians. It will take place in an indoor, residential location with masks required. There will be a guided grief meditation and a message from local activists working to expand healthcare to all. Featured artists include Charlie Moon, Hannah Rooth, Tori Leppert, OAKS, Marisa Reyes, Aries Kae, Don, Hailey Fishberger, Lauren Hulbert, Spring Owls, Olivia Rose Lopez, Sierra Drummond, and Manoela Wunder.

Profits generated by the event will go 50% to Healthcare NOW and 50% to the participating artists (though most artists have chosen to contribute their portions to Healthcare NOW). For tickets, the organizers are asking for donations based on attendees’ means of $0-500.

Entry to Grief Songs: Part One is by presale only through the ticket page on Eventbrite. Seating is limited and expected to sell out.

Grief Songs: Part Two will feature artists Greg in Good Company, Asia Chow, Annie Jay, Marisa Reyes, Justin Dyer, Susan Darvishi, Rocky Kuner, and more special guests to be announced. It will take place in an outdoor location with masks required and special precautions for the sake of immuno-compromised and disabled community members. Spanish and ASL translation will be provided.
